CEPAR Chief Investigator Professor Michael Sherris has been recognised with the APRIA Kyobo Life Contribution Award, in recognition of his steadfast contribution to the ongoing success of the Asia-Pacific Risk and Insurance Association (APRIA) through research, teaching, and service.
Professor Sherris served on the APRIA Board of Governors from 2000-2003, was an Executive Committee member from 2005-2009, and APRIA President from 2008-2009. He was a Country Ambassador and Honorary Auditor and has been involved with the Asia-Pacific Journal of Risk and Insurance over many years. In 2008, Professor Sherris successfully organised the 12th APRIA Conference hosted at UNSW Sydney and helped organise the World Risk and Insurance Economics Congress in Singapore in 2010 which was hosted by APRIA.
Michael Sherris is a CEPAR Chief Investigator and Director of Industry Engagement and Professor in the School of Risk and Actuarial Studies at the UNSW Business School. He was Head of Actuarial Studies at UNSW until 2010 having been appointed to UNSW in 1998 to establish the Actuarial Studies program. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, the Institute of Actuaries (UK) and the Society of Actuaries (North America).
His research sits at the intersection of actuarial science and financial economics and has attracted a number of international and Australian awards, including the International Actuarial Association Bob Alting von Gesau AFIR Prize, Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) annual prize for the most valuable contribution to casualty actuarial science published in American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA) literature, a Geneva Association/IIS Research Program Shin Research Award For Excellence, the Redington Prize of the Society of Actuaries, Best Paper prize for the North American Actuarial Journal and the H M Jackson Memorial Prize of The Institute of Actuaries of Australia.
Professor Sherris was named Australian Actuary of the Year 2007 in recognition of his contributions to actuarial research and education both internationally and within Australia.
He has published in leading international risk and actuarial studies journals; is on the editorial boards of the Annals of Actuarial Science and Asia Pacific Journal of Risk and Insurance; is a co-editor of the North American Actuarial Journal; and is an Editor-in-Chief of the Springer Actuarial Series. He has served on the Council of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia; is a past president (2008- 2009) of the Asia Pacific Risk and Insurance Association; and is a past Chair of the AFIR-ERM Section of the International Actuarial Association.
