The ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (CEPAR) is hosting a Research Showcase at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) on 29 August 2024, from 9am-5pm, highlighting its research in the causes, consequences and responses to population ageing – one of the major economic and social challenges of the twenty first century.

Australia’s population is ageing: Projections suggest that Australia can expect its older population to grow faster than its younger population, according to a new CEPAR Research Brief. The projections suggest that over the next 40 years, the number of Australians aged 65+ is expected to double to nearly 9 million, whereas those below age 65 are expected to increase in number by just more than half. Even taking account of several years of lower migration levels due to the pandemic, the number of Australians aged 65+ would be expected to reach 6.7 million by mid-century – a doubling from 2016.

A unique collaboration between academia, government and industry, CEPAR has undertaken, since 2011, a major independent multidisciplinary research program in the field of population ageing with expertise drawn from Actuarial Science, Demography, Economics, Epidemiology, Psychology, Industrial Relations, Organisational Behaviour and Sociology.

The Research Showcase on 29 August at UNSW Sydney will demonstrate how CEPAR researchers provide Australia, the greater Pacific region, and the world with crucial new knowledge and evidence to enable individuals, businesses, and governments to respond better to demographic change.

The program features leading researchers in the field of population ageing. Sessions are focused on:

  • research highlights and outcomes from the CEPAR research program;
  • stakeholder engagement, research translation and resources developed; and
  • the next generation of researchers in population ageing.

Registration for the CEPAR Research Showcase is free. For more information, visit the showcase website.
