CEPAR researcher Augustus Panton is the recipient of the 2019 ANU Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Education for Tutoring, having previously won the 2018 Excellence in Tutoring Award in the ANU College of Business and Economics.
He tutors undergraduate and postgraduate economic courses. Utilising his expertise from his professional experience and ongoing PhD research, Augustus Panton applies research-led teaching and the case-based learning method, with a focus on student engagement and intellectual simulation and creativity at the heart of the teaching process.
“By creating a classroom environment in which theory and real-world problems are interfaced, my teaching approach is focused on promoting deep and applied understanding of economics,” Augustus Panton said.
“In my teaching, complex theoretical concepts are explained and analysed by framing the discussions around contemporary real-world issues or academic debates. The overall goal is to deepen students’ understanding of the key concepts and the limitations of macroeconomic models when applied to real-world problems.”
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank my supervisor Professor Warwick McKibbin, whose incredible support has made all this possible,” he said.
A colleague commenting on Augustus Panton’s teaching approach said “his classes are lively, students clearly are hungry for more, challenging each other as well as Augustus. The degree of engagement Augustus is able to tease out of his students is testimony to his dedication and assiduousness directed at his students.”
Augustus Panton is a CEPAR PhD candidate in Economics at the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy, supervised by CEPAR Chief Investigator Warwick McKibbin. He is also a Research Assistant at the ANU Centre for Applied Macroeconomic Analysis and a Teaching Assistant at the ANU Research School of Economics.
Prior to joining ANU, Augustus worked as an Economist at the Central Bank of Liberia. Before then, he worked with the Liberian Ministry of Commerce & Industry as an Economist and as Head of the Trade Facilitation Division at the Liberian Ministry of Finance and Development Planning. He has provided consulting services for several international organisations, including the World Bank and the Brookings Institution.
