CEPAR Chief Investigator Professor Peter McDonald AM has been appointed to the Research Committee of the Scanlon Foundation’s Institute for Applied Social Cohesion Research.

As an initiative of the Scanlon Foundation, the Institute exists as a bridge between academic insight and public thought. It is a virtual organisation that unites Australia’s leading thinkers on immigration, to produce a bi-annual journal highlighting important lessons from recent findings and exploring how they can be practically applied. Research on immigration, population and related matters comes from academic institutions, independent think tanks and commentators.

"The Scanlon Foundation supports important research on migrant settlement in Australia and I am looking forward to supporting this work," Professor McDonald said.

Professor McDonald has been influential in Australian immigration policy for more than 20 years, and in December 2018 was invited by the Prime Minister, The Hon. Scott Morrison, to address the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) on population policy.

Peter McDonald is Professor of Demography at the University of Melbourne. He was President of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population for the years, 2010-2013. In 2015, he received the prestigious Irene B. Taueber Award from the Population Association of America which recognises an unusually original or important contribution to the scientific study of population. He is frequently consulted on the issue of population futures (causes, consequences and policies) by governments around the world, especially in Australia, Europe and East Asia. In 2008, he was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia.
