CEPAR Director Scientia Professor John Piggott AO
Welcome to the first newsletter of the “new” CEPAR.
Following two successful seven-year funding periods under the ARC’s Centre of Excellence program, the second funding term concluded in September 2024. We have been fortunate to secure new funding to continue population ageing research over the coming years, primarily with researchers based at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Renamed the Centre for Population Ageing Research—while retaining the familiar acronym CEPAR—it will take on a more focused role within the UNSW Business School. The specified domains of research include broad economic issues, led by Alan Woodland; decision-making for and in old age, led by Hazel Bateman; health, aged care, mortality and morbidity and associated insurance estimation, led by Michael Sherris; and ageing in Asia, with particular reference to Australia’s involvement, led by Phillip O’Keefe.
It has been a tremendous honour to lead the ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research over the past fourteen years and to work with the extraordinary people and research teams associated with the initiative. I now look forward to leading the next phase of CEPAR within the UNSW Business School in the years ahead.
Much has been accomplished over recent months. We have established all the key processes needed for the Centre, including our new Advisory Committee. Already, we have hosted a range of events, including the Healthy Ageing Workshop co-hosted with the International Centre for Future Health Systems (ICFHS) in Sydney in July; the 10th International Pension Research Association Conference at the OECD in Paris in September; and the 33rd Colloquium on Pensions and Retirement Research at UNSW last month.
CEPAR researchers also spoke at multiple conferences and events and continue to publish papers in academic journals and in our working paper series. This newsletter provides a brief snapshot of recent and upcoming activities.
If you would like to join UNSW CEPAR as an Affiliate — to connect with the population ageing research community and stay up to date with the Centre’s activities — please visit our website for more information.
I look forward to staying connected.
