Next month CEPAR will host the 6th in its series of Policy Dialogues, jointly with the Centre for Applied Macroeconomic Analysis (CAMA) in the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University (ANU). The theme is topical – migration and ageing in a multicultural Australia.
CEPAR’s Policy Dialogues are designed to provide a multidisciplinary and synthesised analysis of an issue of relevance to population ageing. Often they are accompanied by a Research Brief, giving an overview of research relevant to the issue at hand, and summarising CEPAR research within this broader context.
This year’s Policy Dialogue agenda on migration and ageing in a multicultural Australia takes us further than the immediate impact of migrant intake. It emphasises the longer term matters facing migrant and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities: their social and economic experiences as they age, and the challenges they face in navigating Australia’s health and aged care systems. Aged care in general is a growing challenge. It is of particular importance with respect to ageing migrants who are more likely to experience cultural and language barriers.
The program features commentary by academic and practice experts and policymakers.
The associated Research Brief that will be launched at the Policy Dialogue takes a birds-eye view of the demographics of diversity in an ageing Australia and focuses on the experiences of CALD communities in this context. It looks at existing socioeconomic vulnerabilities of migrant CALD communities and demonstrates how future demographic change can affect the demand for services. These are challenges and opportunities which become more prominent for policymakers in years to come – and which are already present in today’s Australia.
