The ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (CEPAR) and the School of Risk and Actuarial Studies in the UNSW Business School hosted the 29th Colloquium on Pensions and Retirement Research on 1-3 December 2021. Over 220 representatives from the wider research community, government and industry registered to participate in the three-day online conference.
Bringing together academia, government, industry and the community from around the globe, the Colloquium delegates heard from the latest research on financing retirement in the 2020s and beyond.
The program featured over 50 high-level talks and presentations, including plenary sessions on financing aged care, chaired by Marc de Cure, CEPAR Advisory Board Chair and Adjunct Professor, CEPAR, UNSW Business School; the retirement sandbox program, presented by multi-award-winning educator Dr Kevin Liu of the School of Risk and Actuarial Studies, UNSW Business School; and the macroeconomic environment for superannuation and pensions, chaired by Colloquium convenor Hazel Bateman, CEPAR Deputy Director and Professor in the School of Risk and School of Risk and Actuarial Studies, UNSW Business School.
Especially topical was a panel session focused on the Australian Government’s Retirement Income Covenant, chaired by CEPAR Director John Piggott AO, Scientia Professor of Economics in the UNSW Business School. Panellists included Robbie Campo (Group Executive – Brand, Engagement, Advocacy and Product, Cbus); Jeremy Cooper (Chairman, Retirement Income, Challenger); Jordan George (Director, Retirement, Advice and Investments Division, Australian Treasury); and Suzanne Smith (Executive Director – Superannuation, Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA)).
Further Colloquium sessions covered the latest research on pensions and climate change; superannuation; pensions, labour supply and household decisions; new retirement products; health and longevity; financial decisions; home equity release; annuities; retirement outcomes; as well as research on pensions and long-term care in Asia.
The Best PhD Paper Presentation Award 2021 has been awarded to Zhixiu Yu from the University of Minnesota for her paper presentation on Trends in the Labour Supply of Older Men and the Role of Social Security. Zhixiu Yu is a PhD candidate in Economics at the University of Minnesota. Her research focuses on labour, health, gender, and public economics, and her research combines rigorous macro models, rich microdata, and large-scale simulations to explore important problems at the interaction of public policy and individual behaviors in the United States.
The 29th Annual Colloquium of Pensions and Retirement Research also hosted a special online session on the global experience of financing retirement, sponsored by the International Pension Research Association (IPRA), on December 3, 2021.
With insights being showcased from across the world, this session provided an opportunity to hear global trends in financing retirement in the 2020s and beyond.
