Speaking at the Mortality in Australia Symposium CEPAR Chief Investigators Peter McDonald and Philip Clarke commented on life expectancy in Australia today and on the challenges of working to further extend life expectancy.

Over the 150 years since the first Australian life table was published life expectancy nearly doubled from 45.6 years to over 80 years, but to achieve further gains would require major lifestyle changes to combat diseases such as heart disease and obesity.
